Taking a look at the Most Useful Android Apps – Programming Insider

There are so many apps for Android phones out there that it can make you dizzy searching through the online store. The evolution of apps has been astonishing. It is likely, in the end, you rely on recommendations from friends or from reading articles like this. Consequently, it is important that we provide you with the most honest reflection of what is available for your Android smartphone today.

Universe in a Nutshell

The concept here might seem strange but the reality is so interesting. The presentation is cartoon-like, which gives the impression it is for kids but in reality it is super intriguing for adults too.

What is it? Well, it is an educational app that helps you get a feel for the relative size of parts of the universe. Click into the app and you will be given the image of a giraffe, an elephant and a human. If you squeeze into the app the world gets smaller and you begin to have sight of the microscopic creatures in the universe. Drag it out and you are treated to the larger items such as suns and planets. You can tap on any of the images for more detail, as you zoom in and out.

Most simple apps are genius. Universe in a Nutshell will give you hours of exploring fun.

Glitch Lab

Glitch Lab is a photo editor that is packed with glitch effects for your photographs. There are plenty of apps like this one and the effects it offers wont appeal to everyone. However, it is a great way to send your photos back in time and give them some retro appeal. There are about a hundred effects on offer and with a bit of experimentation, you can make some pretty cool images.

DoodleLens

This is a gimmick app but it is still a bit of fun for a while and it is only a couple of quid. You doodle something on the phone and then point your phones camera anywhere in your space and you can put the doodle into the image, using the superpowers of augmented reality.

There are loads of possibilities here it just takes a bit of imagination and some bored time on your hands.

Not only can you scribble and doodle and throw it out into the world, you can change the colour and make some basic animations by using multiple doodles in a cycle. You then have the option of recording and saving the results.

It is not a serious attempt at a productivity app -it is just meant to make you smile and it does.

Pixtica

Pixtica wants to replace your default camera and the success of this mission largely depends on your phone. Some models receive a massive upgrade with this app, others the app is nothing special.

There are a lot of features, including filters, a GIF recorder, panorama, hyperlapse, and more. The odd ones like the planet mode makes everything warped into a sphere shape add a bit of fun.

While the app is free, if you want to remove the watermark and increase the resolution to your image, you will need to subscribe! It is only 1.25 a month. However, as you have a camera on your phone anyway, you might not think it is worth it. Have a play and see.

StoryZ Photo Motion & Cinemagraph

Maybe not the catchiest of titles but it does do what it says on the tin it is a photo editing app with two parts. First, it adds motion to static images. All you need to do is draw the area and direction of the motion. This is amazing on water and clouds and the like. However, it can make other photos feel really weird. Second, there is the motion mode that helps you blend a video with a photo. This leaves you with an image that is at times static and at times in motion.

If you are less than convinced, then go to the app and see some of the submissions from previous users. Your mind will be blown. The good news is that you can enter contests too, as the app creators regularly run these for your enjoyment.

While the initial app is free, you will want to pay the subscription once you fall in love with the tools and see the possibilities.

Tattoodo

Tattoodo is a little different. It is really a search engine for tattoos with literally millions of images. You can filter through based on your required style or the sort of image you want. You can also select images by the artists.

However, it serves as an Instagram for tattoo artists too, as you can follow their work and their latest designs will pop up in your feed. It also allows you to build up a library of designs that you really like and share some of these with the world.

For us mortals, it is a great place to source amazing art from the best tattooists out there. For the artist, it is an opportunity to spread the word about your work and gather yourself a following.
